Elgin fifth at the Festival
14 March 2018
Elgin finished a fine fifth in the Grade 1 Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival on Tuesday 13 March, and will now have a well earned break for the rest of the season. The homebred gelding, trained by Alan King, has won three Pattern races this season, including a Listed handicap hurdle, the Grade 3 Greatwood Hurdle and the Grade 2 Kingwell Hurdle. At the Festival, Elgin jumped the last in fourth place, but was outstayed up the hill, having been unsuited by the dead, tacky ground, which is the result of all the snow and rain the course had received leading up to the Festival.
Alan King and jockey Wayne Hutchinson were delighted with the run and are very much looking forward to next year with the prolific son of Duke Of Marmalade. He came back in a much stronger horse after his last summer break and we hope he will benefit from another break, as he could fill out further and potentially develop into a chasing prospect further down the line. We would like to congratulate all involved with Elgin this season, and thank them for helping to give Club Members another wonderful year to remember.
