Viola wins on seasonal debut
24 May 2021
A largely progressive three-year-old in 2020, the James Fanshawe-trained Viola added a second career win to her CV when she won the 1m4f Class 4 handicap at Lingfield's evening meeting last Saturday.
The success was not only the first of the current season for the homebred Viola, but also her second from three starts at Lingfield, echoing the winning Flat form of her half-brother Mon Frere, two seasons ago.
Mon Frere recently switched to hurdles and has shown plenty of promise, winning his second start over timber at Taunton last month. That success and Viola's latest win are poignant reminders of their dam, the late Sistine, who had to be put to sleep earlier this year, and was herself a winner in Club colours.
Given that Viola overcame some problems in running to record her latest win off a handicap mark 5lb higher than for her previous win, she looks progressive and can hopefully continue to fly the flag for Sistine and the Club's breeding programme in the coming summer months.
