Viola impresses on Group race debut

Viola impresses on Group race debut

30 May 2022

Elite Racing Club's classy homebred mare Viola confirmed herself to be one on an upward curve when she was a fast-finishing runner up in the Group 3 Pinnacle Stakes at Haydock on Saturday 28 May.

The five-year-old daughter of Lope De Vega has won four times to date (pictured above winning at Lingfield in May 2021), most recently a Class 2 handicap at Southwell last December. Prior to that, she had twice been beaten by the William Haggas-trained Sea La Rosa in the autumn, in a fillies' handicap and then a Listed race, and while it was Sea La Rosa who again proved just too good for Viola last weekend, it was the runner-up who surely impressed more.

On her first start in four months, Viola looked to have a fair task on her hands. Rated 94 ahead of the Pinnacle Stakes, she had plenty to find with the 103-rated Sea La Rosa, with both carrying the same weight. Viola came through from the rear in taking fashion, keeping on well in the last furlong until left short of room almost within the shadow of the post.

Beaten only one and a quarter-lengths by Sea La Rosa, Viola showed she is contiuing to improve and it will be fascinating to see where longstanding Club trainer James Fanshawe sends her for her next race, with a repeat trip to Haydock a possibility for next month's Lancashire Oaks.
