Top class Club action
12 July 2018
The highlight of the past month for Club Members has been Tribute Act's tremendous second place at Royal Ascot in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes. Our homebred filly outran her odds and her rating to lead at the furlong pole, before the impressive Aljazzi asserted close home. Tribute Act hails from one of the Club's most prolific families, as she is the final foal out of Sister Act, who also bred Group 1 winner Ribbons, and is out of Kalinka, who bred multiple Group 1 winner Soviet Song and Grade 1 winner, Penzance. Tribute Act is now being aimed at a Listed race at Ascot or the Group 1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville, with both races run at the end of the month.
Like the fillies previously mentioned, Tribute Act is trained by James Fanshawe, who has masterminded the campaigns of several members of her family. James is very hopeful her pedigree can be further improved this season, which is very important to us, as she is set to join the Breeding Programme when she retires, which should be at the end of this season or next.
There have also been wins for hurdler Volcanic and the remarkable Judicial. Volcanic won his first race for almost three years at his beloved Cartmel on 1 July, when cantering home in a handicap hurdle. Donald McCain was delighted to get the blinkered son of Al Namix back in the winners' enclosure and is targeting other races at the course this summer.
The win of Judicial in the Group 3 Coral Charge at Sandown last weekend was a highlight for many Members, as it was his first at Pattern level. Ridden by Julie Camacho's stable jockey, Paul Mulrennan, Judicial never looked like being beaten, having been ridden handily throughout. This follows his win at Beverley during Royal Ascot week, and we hope he can improve on the record by the prolific Eisteddfod by becoming the Club's winning-most horse - he needs just two more wins to add to his current haul of eleven. No one would be against this happening, and we very much look forward to the potential of seeing him appear at the Curragh next time out in a Group 2 contest, before his seasonal aim, the Group 1 Nuthorpe Stakes at York at the end of August. This race was won by his half-sister Marsha last season and we would dearly love to retain the trophy this season.
