Novice hurdlers in action this week

24 February 2017

Last Tuesday, Top Tug finished third at Taunton for Alan King and Wayne Hutchinson, which was another good run from the popular chestnut. Top Tug was placed behind former Triumph Hurdle fancy, Tommy Silver, who looked revitalised on better ground. Top Tug was slightly outpaced turning into the straight, so could step up in trip next time, having previously shown useful stamina on the Flat.

On Saturday, Elgin lines up for the Grade 2 Dovecote Novice Hurdle at Kempton, screened live on ITV4. Elgin has progressed with each run this winter, beginning with his second place at Aintree back in November. He went on to win two races over hurdles, including a decent contest over the same course and distance as he will encounter on Saturday. Elgin has since finished second to the highly promising Neon Wolf in the Grade 2 Sky Bet Supreme Trial, which was another decent effort.

Elgin has the classy Capitaine to beat, as well as the highly regarded River Wylde, amongst others. The result of the Dovecote Hurdle should decide who books their ticket to Cheltenham and who doesn't, and we very much hope Elgin can be one of those that impresses and makes the cut for the big day. He is currently entered in the Grade 1 Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Festival, which could be an exciting option for his trainer to consider.
