Elgin aimed at Kingwell Hurdle next weekend
09 February 2018
Many of the Club's horses are either getting fit for the coming Flat turf season or are waiting for better jumping ground at the moment, hence runners have been pretty scarce since the New Year. Elgin finished a fine sixth in the £150,000 Racing Welfare Handicap Hurdle at Ascot on 23 December, and is currently being aimed at the Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton on Saturday 17 February. Trainer, Alan King won the Grade 2 feature race with the fancied Yanworth last season and he is hoping he can retain the trophy with Elgin this season. Granted, the homebred son of Duke Of Marmalade will have to step up from handicap company, but his tenacious win in the Greatwood Hurdle in November suggested he is good enough to cope.
With the Champion Hurdle so soon after this race, we hope it will not attract a star and Elgin can enjoy some time in the limelight, which we feel is richly deserved. The fast, flat track should suit Elgin, so we hope for an exciting race at the West Country course next weekend.
Zest has run with great consistency on the all-weather this winter, winning at Lingfield on 23 December, before finishing third at Wolverhampton in her latest race. She could line up on 27 February at Lingfield for another fillies' race, as she runs so well at the Surrey track. Zest is due to be covered by Oasis Dream this spring, so there is every chance she could run whilst in-foal, which has been known to coax some improvement out of fillies and mares in the past, so we look forward to this prospect, as she is already Listed class. Having chased home the talented Muffi'Ha in November, we would love to think the Club homebred could win at Pattern level before commencing her breeding career this year.
Our racing manager was out of luck at the recent Tattersalls Horses In Training sale in Newmarket, but he remains on the lookout for another dual-purpose prospect to bolster the Club's National Hunt division. We are searching hard for the right horse to go jumping, to keep our supporters of the winter game content for seasons to come.
