Constancio wins first race in Club colours

25 January 2019

Constancio ran out a seven-length winner in his fourth race over hurdles, when making all to win at Doncaster this afternoon. Brian Hughes put Constancio's experienced jumping to good use by kicking on when the flag dropped to ensure a good, consistent pace, against some inexperienced horses. Constancio was racing against horses with decent records on the Flat, including the 94-rated The Grand Visir, the 91-rated Magellan and the recent hurdles winner, Groveman, which makes the achievement all the more impressive.

Brian maintained an even gallop, which kept his rivals under pressure. He moved over to the stands' rail in the home straight and kept the free-running Saryshagann at bay, as he eventually weakened to finish third. Groveman ran on to finish second, seven lengths behind the Club's second Jumps winner this year; Lisheen Castle won at Wetherby on 4 January (on jumping debut) and both horses were bought at last summer's July Sale at Tattersalls. They were two excellent purchases and we hope they can both win again this season - with Lisheen Castle entered up again at Ludlow on Monday.
