Club action in May
16 May 2018
Sadly for Harmonica, Dusseldorf seemed to be the only place in Europe that avoided the April showers, and she was out sprinted by her-fast ground loving opposition at the German track. A full account of Harmonica's sixth place is included in the latest Club update video, available on the Club website for Members, including walking the course with big-race jockey, Luke Morris. Two horses who have been flying the flag for the Club are Elgin and Judicial. Starting with the letter, he was unlucky not to win the Club's second successive Palace House stakes at Newmarket on 2,000 Guineas day, as he led inside the final furlong before denied by a neck by the young filly, Mabs Cross. She challenged him wide and late and he didn't have time to react to her arriving on the scene. We were delighted with his run and look forward to our homebred son of Iffraaj contesting some of the leading five-furlong races this season. We hope he can partly fill the void left by his half-sister, Marsha, who was sold at Tattersalls last year.
Going back to Elgin, he won his first race on the Flat at Chelmsford last week, adding to his six wins under National Hunt rules. Alan King has some fancy plans for the homebred son of Duke Of Marmalade, who could be aimed at some of the leading staying handicaps this season, including the £1m Ebor Handicap run at York in August. After finishing fifth in the Champion Hurdle, the 158-rated hurdler looks as though he could be very useful on the level, following his effortless demolition of the maiden Its'afreebie in a novice event over 1m5f. The Club still has ten unraced horses to run on the Flat this season, so there is plenty to look forward to for Club Members in 2018.
