Cheltenham over, onwards to the Flat season
22 March 2017
Elgin ran well to finish seventh in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival. His jumping lacked its normal fluency, possibly not helped by the fast pace and running on an undulating track for the first time. What was very encouraging was the way he travelled between obstacles, as he made up ground pretty effortlessly, until the final furlong when the 25/1 winner, Labaik, asserted. Elgin is thought to possess enough gallop to offer consideration to running on the Flat, if the ground was to remain soft enough for Elgin. Alan King has a high quality string of Flat horses, and even enjoyed his first Royal Ascot winner last season, proving his efficiency as a dual-purpose trainer.
Elgin's stablemate, Top Tug, is likely to return to racing on the Flat after not really enjoying the hustle and bustle of the competitive Silver Plate Hurdle at Kempton last Saturday. Last season was a real success story for Top Tug, as he won first time out at Lingfield and then ran super races at the Dante and Ebor meetings at York, and represented the Club at Royal Ascot during the summer. We hope there is much more fun to be had with both of these horses, as they could be surprise bonuses to our already impressive string of Flat horses.
